Table Tennis Robot + Video = Win by Roger Dickson

Newgy Robo-Pong

Many times in table tennis training I try to explain to my students problems in some technical aspect of their game and they struggle to understand how to fix the problem. So by using the Newgy Robo-Pong 2050 table tennis robot and a video camera, I can get the students to actually see the mistake I am trying to correct. Too many times I have personally felt I have fixed something in my own game just to see video of myself doing a “better” version of the incorrect form.

By using the Robo-Pong 2050 I can have the precise control of the positioning and speed to make the flaw obvious to the camera and then the student. If the problem develops while moving, finding the correct drill out of the 64 pre-programmed is just a matter of flipping through the Robo-Pong 2050 Owner’s Manual to the center section and the Drill Diagrams. With the Drill Diagrams, I can set up the scenario to replicate the situation that is causing the technical breakdown and have the pattern repeated as needed.

With the video camera in place, I can first have the student do the stroke with the flaw, then do the correction and tape that. With the Robo-Pong 2050, I  can slow the drill down to give the player time to focus on the corrected technical aspect then increase the speed to “test” the stability of the change. In some cases either another player or I will demonstrate the stroke, then the student will do the same stroke or pattern with the Robo-Pong 2050 and a direct comparison can be viewed by the student.

The big advantage of using the Robo-Pong 2050 for table tennis training is that I can send the student home with a clear set of drills to do at home that the student just performed at the Newgy Table Tennis Training Center. Being able to do this “homework” on the Robo-Pong 2050 doesn’t require a high level practice partner to play the patterns and allows the next session to progress with development instead of repeating the exercises from the last session to fix the identified problem.

Remember, seeing is believing and by adding video recording to your Robo-Pong 2050 table tennis robot home training sessions, the player can see and fix errors that used to take many sessions with the table tennis coach at the gym or club to correct.
