27th Annual Hock Open Table Tennis Tournament - Roger Dickson

Most people know me as a table tennis player and coach, but I am also a Certified Table Tennis Referee. This past weekend I was recruited to ref at the 27th Annual Hock Open Table Tennis Tournament in New Albany, Indiana. This is likely the oldest table tennis club in the U.S. and also the former home club to racket making legend Bernard Hock. In the main playing area is a trophy cabinet with several of his personal awards and even some of the tools Bernard used to make his rackets! The photo case has some great photos from the 1940’s and 50’s, as well as some taken shortly before his passing. Many of the last photos were taken with long time friend Eugene Bricker. This event is run to honor both these Indiana table tennis legends.

Out of the 65 players entered, 21 of them were from Lindenwood University. Currently their two strongest men’s players are from India and Brazil! As the #1 and 2 seeds they cruised to the Open final where former India Junior team member Venkat Ramesh pulled a minor upset of Fernando Yamazato from Brazil 11-8 in the seventh game!
